When Christian Laettner made his shot – 25 years ago this March – he had to drain it from just beyond the free throw line. When Kennadie Goth made her ‘Laettner’ this weekend for Shelby (OH) against Bellevue, she had to launch from well beyond three. We’re talking ‘Laettner’ difficulty plus some.
Goth’s shot gave Shelby a 45-44 win and a 14-1 record. From the Mansfield News Journal:
With the team huddled around the bench, Shelby coach Natalie Lantz came up with a plan for one final shot. Maddi Fidler had the best arm strength, given her softball career, so she’d be the one throwing the ball down the court. Sienna King and Raven Hill would set hard screens in an attempt to bunch up Bellevue’s defenders. Kennadie Goth and Jackie Garrett were both told to book it down the court, but Garrett would curl her running route back in to take her defender out. That just left Goth, the fastest of the bunch, to get open near the opposite baseline and hopefully have enough time to set up a decent shot.
“We were all trying to stay pretty cool and collected,” Goth said. “But within us we were like, ‘We’ve got to get this.’ I still had hope. I was like, ‘We can still do this, I know we still can. It’s 0.8 seconds, but it’s doable.'”
Laettner had 2.1 seconds.
No. 11 from Bellevue went Sean Woods after Goth made her shot…agony of defeat 25 years later:
Thanks to @Fritz_dacat for pointing out that Woods hit the go-ahead shot on Duke just like #11 from Bellevue did against Shelby. God’s out here playing with our brains 25 years later. No clue why he chose an Ohio basketball game to play head games.
